Looking forward to Book 2. View 2 comments. It was,,, ok. The book started pretty meh, felt like a formulaic fantasy novel set in a mediaeval world with magic and politics.

Wasn't that great of a hook, but a few chapters in and you realise that oh this was a deliberate writing style since our main character and narrator view spoiler [ is as dumb ignorant?

There really is a good reason why she hasn't taken the throne yet. There's also the soft magic system introduced, where even Matilde doesn't know how her powers work.

It felt very haphazard and forced for her to end up the way she did. It was like the ending had already been set and we needed to see her there before the page limit was reached.

Also, she can suddenly shake the earth? That make's no sense- how does one as unexperienced and physically weak as she is suddenly achieve all of that?

Do I want to read the sequel? Kind of, since the story has already gotten to this point. If they all die, they all die. I'm actually ok with that kind of ending, because protagonist was framed to be this realistically helpless.

Probably not. Mar 16, S. Wright rated it really liked it. A Duethin stands still, Matilde. None among the Turasi will bend their neck to a fidgeter.

Thus we are introduced to our protagonist, a young woman on the verge of becoming the leader of the squabbling Turasi Clans.

To say she is wholly unprepared for the events of the novel is an understatement. The Tale Shadow Queen is a pacey political thriller in a fantasy setting.

Our protagonist Matilde is to take the throne and rule over the Turasi. Before she can claim it, she is usurped by the leader of a renegade clan and in an effort to survive the slaughter of her entire line, offers herself in marriage.

Kill your darlings or Oppress them Kalin is merciless in placing her protagonist in dire straights from beginning to end.

I love that our protagonist rarely wields a weapon, or becomes Xena Warrior princess to achieve her aims. It is of course set against a backdrop of impending war, but Kalin has done a great job using psychological tension and the interplay between characters to ensure that neither Matilde nor the reader really have a chance to catch their breath.

Story and Character The world of Shadow Queen is broadly painted. Kalin gives us sign posts rather than detailed histories. She wants our focus on story and character.

Kalin succeeds and the result is pacey and emotionally enticing. Matilde is believable, a young adult thrust into leadership and woefully incapable of playing the political game.

But she is a survivor and one gets the impression that she will learn, if painfully so. Shadow Queen strikes me as a mature work, not a debut novel.

Its pace and ease of reading feels more like the work of a journeyman than a novice. I am looking forward to more of Deborah Kalin.

This novel was provided to me at no cost by the author Apr 11, Celia rated it liked it Shelves: fantasy , australian-author. I enjoyed this tense, dark fantasy, about Matilde, the heir to the throne, and the considerable political upheaval that takes place in her land.

I was a bit concerned that the story was edging towards a falling-in-love-with-a-captor thing, which is one of my pet hates.

It's ends ambigiously - there's clearly a lot more story to come, and ends in a fairly dark place - and so it's not clear whether Matilde's feelings whatever they are, and even she is not sure are the result of a sort of I enjoyed this tense, dark fantasy, about Matilde, the heir to the throne, and the considerable political upheaval that takes place in her land.

It's ends ambigiously - there's clearly a lot more story to come, and ends in a fairly dark place - and so it's not clear whether Matilde's feelings whatever they are, and even she is not sure are the result of a sort of Stockholm syndrome.

I like the uncertain nature of this novel, Matilde's desperate attempts to regain and secure power, the desperate sense of how much is at stake.

It's not a cliffhanger ending not a happy end, but not really a cliffhanger which is nice in a series where you have to wait for the next book to be published.

Mar 11, Isobel rated it did not like it. I don't know what to think of this book. It was an easy read and I think I enjoyed it but I didn't understand any of the plot and I couldn't relate to the the main character.

Everything happens so quickly, if the writer had decided to write more prose instead of something different happening each chapter that would be great.

Also do the characters in this realm have multiple-personalities because that's what it felt like. One second you would know what a character was like, then it would change I don't know what to think of this book.

One second you would know what a character was like, then it would change and keep changing. Especially with Dieter. That drove me nuts. There is a sequel but I'm not interested Dec 20, Jess rated it liked it.

I found Shadow Queen quite fast-paced and refreshing to read. I think the author achieved a good balance of detail for the readers to visualise the storys setting and characters without over doing it like many other books in the same genre.

The protagonist, Matilde, is a very believable character and I found myself empathising with all that she endured.

I recommend Shadow Queen to anyone who is after a quick and easy read, filled with a good combination of action, suspense, politics and magic.

She is a highly power-hungry and ruthless demon whose actions have led to the destruction of entire lands and the murders of millions.

She is shown to be one of the if not the most disturbing and immoral villains within the series and not having kindness and care for anything or anyone, even if those ever did favors for her, as she almost killed Sir Grodus knowing that he resurrected her.

Many of the monsters Mario fought were part of her army and her most loyal followers were the ones manipulating the course of events to revive her, in which they succeeded.

In addition to being a demon from the dark depths, the Shadow Queen is highly sadistic as all her strongholds and fortresses are overflowing with thousands of mutilated corpses.

This all contributed to her sadistic personality and thirst for violence. Her power seemed to possess no limits as she created demonic armies, three immortal dragons and even the Crystal Stars themselves.

The Crystal Stars seem to have unlimited power and taking into account that they represent only portions of the queen's power, her power seems to be nearly godlike.

After years of her reign of terror, her reputation became so horrible and well-known that people shuddered at the mere mention of her or any of her followers and monsters.

Unsurprisingly the queen was able to instill massive fear in not just the world itself but her followers as well. She seems to be so evil that her very presence brings a horrible aura as well as darkness in the skies.

Her palace and even the Thousand-Year Door itself all have a horrible feeling and even the thugs of Rogueport stay away from the door due to the feeling it evokes.

Even after her first defeat, her minions, The Shadow Sirens , attempted to revive her by using other villains. Other than the stories told within the game, not much more in known about the witch and it seems that she has done nothing else within her existence other than creating destruction, chaos and mass murder.

Legend has it that the Shadow Queen simply appeared out of nowhere one day and waged war against the city where Rogueport now stands. She destroyed the city, murdered all who stood in her path, the war itself would be described as a "great cataclysm where the earth shook and skies roared".

After the attack, the city crumbled and sank into the earth. One third of the city was reconstructed to be the Palace of Shadow where the entrance would be the 1,Year Door itself, the death trap of evil.

The demonic Queen next set her sights on the rest of the world, hoping to plunge it into an endless time of darkness under her control.

She created numerous demonic beasts and spirits to make the core of her army. Among them were the three Shadow Sirens who would be the most trusted followers of the queen.

With her new army, the Shadow Queen set them on the surrounding areas of the world. The demons wiped out all resistance as they took the lands by force, killing millions of people in the process.

Towns were destroyed and their treasures were stolen to be stored within the palace, soon to become rich with valuables. The Shadow Queen was far from finished though and created three dragons, Hooktail , Gloomtail , and Bonetail.

These dragons became the loyal pets of the queen and quickly spread fear and suffering throughout the world, feasting on numerous people, destroying towns and leaving them to burn, and killing anyone.

The queen and her army quickly became feared above all else and the mere mention of their name sent people into a fearful state of panic.

As more areas fell to the Shadow Queen, she next created the Crystal Stars. These stars were placed in separate areas around the world to exert the queen's influence.

Realizing that her opposition were still recruiting others, the queen created a dungeon called the Pit of Trials. The place was a torture chamber where people were devoured by demonic beasts and Bonetail.

This very pit is found right next to The Thousand-Year Door, where there are literally floors. Just when all hope seemed lost, four brave warriors stepped forward to end the reign of the demon once and for all or so they thought.

The Toad from Petalburg came to be seen as a hero when he defended his town from the Queen's evil forces. The wise Goomba was a resident of the Boggly Woods and used his vast set of knowledge to aid the Punis in defending themselves against the monsters.

The scarred Koopa went around the world battling evil. He became feared among the dark army, but eventually, a trap was set for him and he soon fell into it.

The Boo warrior of the army then left her demonic allegiance and helped the Koopa. The Boo then used her powers to predict that they would need the aid of the Toad, and the wise Goomba in order to have a fighting chance against the Shadow Queen.

There they faced the demon in an epic battle. After an intense fight, the heroes defeated the queen after achieving to destroy her physical body.

Even then though, the queen's demonic spirit lived on and attempted to kill the warriors. The heroes made one last effort and sealed the queen in her own palace, thus ridding the world of one of the most evilest of evils.

Before the seal was complete though, the queen sent a portion of her magic into the heroes. The effects would not be felt while they held the stars, but afterward, the heroes would become trapped within black chests.

The queen vowed to return one day and will conquer the world when that day dawns. The heroes then realized that the demon's threats may not just be a bluff.

They sealed the Palace entrance with the stars and the seal would remain for 1, years, the entrance to the palace would then go on to be known as The Thousand-Year Door.

Realizing that others may need the stars in case the queen returns, they made a map of the stars in case the future heroes would need them. To ensure that the map only fell into pure hands, they placed it in a chest that could only be opened by one pure of heart.

While the war finally seemed to be over, there were other plans in effect to ensure that the demon would return to the world. The Shadow Sirens began to spread rumors of a great treasure hidden in the earth beneath the location of the old city.

People then constructed a town over the city, which soon became filled with thugs and robbers, hoping to claim the treasure for themselves. None of them knew that the treasure was actually a demon and that the rumor of the treasure was nothing more than a ruse in part of an insidious plot to send the world into complete darkness again.

The seal on the palace door began to fade and the Shadow Queens servants, the Shadow Sirens knew the time to release their queen would soon come.

The Shadow Sirens joined the cult of the X-Nauts. The X-Nauts were a criminal organization of unknown origin and existed to conquer the world.

Grodus who hoped to rule the world thought by releasing the Shadow Queen would be able to control her and use her to fulfill his dream.

This was all a lie a by Beldam though just to get Grodus to help so as to free her because evil like Beldam could not touch the seal that was on the queen.

With the X-Nauts playing into her hands, Beldam came into possession of the chest that contained the Magic Map. She gave it to Grodus and told him that it could be the ideal way of finding a pure maiden.

Beldam knew that if the queen were to return to full power, a vessel would be needed. The vessel needed to be one of pure origin though and seeing how the chest could be opened by someone as such, it was the perfect way to find the maiden.

After the Shadow Queen congratulates the Shadow Sirens for their work, she offers Mario and company a chance to join her. They, of course, refuse the offer, and engage her in combat.

Mario and his allies won the first round, but when round two began, the Shadow Queen revealed her true form, becoming invincible in the process.

She was completely immune to the attacks of Mario and his party. During this time, she offers them another chance to join her, stating that she'll forgive them for their resistance.

As soon as they refuse again, the seven Crystal Stars appear, and scatter across the world, returning to the areas that they came from, in order for everyone to send their wishes and positive energy to give Mario and company the power they needed to defeat the Shadow Queen, as well as breaking her invincibility barrier.

As soon as the third round began, the Shadow Queen was no longer invulnerable, and their attacks actually began to inflict damage on her. After a long, tough battle, the Shadow Queen was eventually defeated, and Princess Peach was returned to her normal self.

As being the final boss of the game, the Shadow Queen possess numerous of moves that is damaging. If Mario agrees, the Shadow Queen will engulf the world with her foul magic, resulting in a Game Over for Mario, for Peach, and for the world.

When Mario refuses, the Shadow Queen attacks him and his friends, intending to put them in their place, but finds that Princess Peach's body is impeding her power.

The Shadow Queen assumes her real form, and for a time becomes impervious to Mario and his friends' attacks. However, the Crystal Stars manage to travel to their home locations, allowing the people of each area to communicate with Mario.

The goodwill and wishes of people the world over are enough to suppress the Shadow Queen's possession of Princess Peach; she regains control of her body long enough to give Mario all her remaining power.

Restored, Mario and his partners battle against the Shadow Queen once again; they are able to defeat and seal her away forever, and Peach regains control of her own body once again.

As with most characters in the manga, she displays more of a comic side. Her connection to the Shadow Sirens is given an indirect reference in her unlock requirements, which requires Vivian's spirit to be summoned alongside a Gengar spirit core.

The Shadow Queen is an immortal demon, having survived for a full thousand years while being sealed in the Palace of Shadow.

She can also possess other people, and has a variety of magic at her disposal, which she uses to create powerful creatures and objects such as the three dragons and the Crystal Stars.

However, her vessel may be able to suppress or co-opt her influence temporarily if they possess particularly strong willpower.

In battle, while in her true form she is immune to normal and defense-piercing attacks, and can only be made vulnerable with the power of the Crystal Stars.

She is able to use her hands to drain the health of her enemies and pierce their defenses; they are also capable of smashing opponents to the ground, and are considered separate enemies that can be targeted individually.

When the hands defeated, the Shadow Queen can revive them the following turn. The Shadow Queen is also able to strike her opponents with lightning that pierces her target's defenses.

When low on health, the queen will often resort to attacks that induce poison , confusion , or allergies that prevent status changes. One of the Shadow Queen's stronger attacks is the use of several shadowy hands that come up from the ground and drag Mario or one of his partners down into the shadows and damage them with several attacks or stampede them for heavy defense-piercing damage.

The queen will also attack the audience members with these hands to drain their energy to restore herself to full health and power.

Her strongest attack is a series of dark energy waves that hit Mario and his partner for heavy damage, but this attack takes a turn to charge up, allowing Mario to avoid it with Vivian 's Veil ability.

Additionally, the Shadow Queen also has the ability to temporarily raise her attack and defense by 3. The Shadow Queen is a demon who cares only for herself and her aspirations, particularly conquering the world and remaking it in her image; she seems to rule her followers through fear rather than loyalty, as she often uses her powers to intimidate them.
